Shreve shares part of his journey of Resilience and how to find joy in the difficulties of life.
Aug 26, 2024I am a resilient thriver who is an overcomer. I can overcome anything given the knowledge base and the right people. Today, what is important about today? So August 26, 2022 is a date etched in my life for gratitude, and it didn't start on August 26. It actually started before then, and it started back on August 3rd when my life took a turn I never anticipated.
It started with a run in the woods that ended up into heart catheterization that moved into a quadruple bypass, and open heart surgery. And that should have been the end of my struggles at that point. But instead, it led to a cascade of challenges, complications arose, and by August 26, I was faced with the unimaginable, the above and the knee amputation of my left leg due to heparin induced thrombosis. As if that weren't enough, I also endured a brain injury and the discovery of Addison's Disease, which is a failure of the adrenal gland and a lack of cortisol in my system.
Yet today, I stand in deep gratitude after all of those things occurred. It doesn't just stop with the deep connection of this day, but for everyone who has ever walked with me on this treacherous path with me.
With the loss of my leg, this event affected so many people around me in different ways. And so I have to honor their journey as much as I have to honor mine. And as I move forward, I actually have to help move everybody with me at the same time through their own healing and guide them because they have their protective strategies to look out for me.
Many have asked how I managed to remain resilient in the face of such overwhelming adversity. How do I find moments of joy in my life, amidst life's most brutal trials? Change is the only constant in our lives. Seasons change, and with every passing day, we evolve, sometimes by choice, sometimes by force beyond our control, such as myself with the loss of my leg. But my journey toward resilience didn't begin on August 3rd. It has been a lifelong quest, a quest of challenging paradigms, a relentless pursuit of understanding what it truly means to be resilient.
Resilience is more than just enduring. It's about faith in something greater than yourself. It's an unwelding awareness of oneself, of who one is authentic, and a commitment to healing the wounds of the past. It means shedding the limiting beliefs that bind us, unearthing the anchors of the negative emotions that tie us to the past, and transforming behaviors that no longer serve to protect us, but keep us separated from ourselves and from others. It is through this practice of resilience that we unlock the ability to see, and even feel, joy in the darkest of times of our lives. I hope this resonates with you.
In all that we do, we have to look at things from our own belief structures on how to create the best environment for healing and our journey, because we don't walk this life by ourselves. We just don't.
